If you want to lose weight and get fitter but can’t stand the thought of hitting the gym then you should broaden your search for activities you can get involved with.

Rock and mountain climbing have recently been highlighted as some of the best alternative activities to the gym, because they burn calories and help you tone up and lose fat.

According to the Daily Star, you can burn up to 900 calories an hour when you’re rock climbing. What’s more, the newspaper points out that this activity is an incredible full-body workout.

The newspaper stated: “When it comes to activating a diverse range of muscles few activities rival climbing.”

But that’s not the only advantage to spending some time climbing or bouldering. The publication also shared research from the University of North Florida, which has found that climbing – and any other activities that involve balance, spatial orientation and muscle coordination – can “significantly improve a person’s working memory”.

If you’re keen to give climbing a try, but are a bit worried about starting the sport as we’re moving into autumn, don’t panic. There are plenty of indoor climbing walls where you can learn the basics before getting ready to move outdoors when the weather warms up next year.

When it comes to things to do in Audley, you could do worse than head to the Audley Climbing Centre for a few hours of fun.

If you’re keen to be active in the great outdoors and avoid the gym, the Belfast Telegraph recently had some other suggestions of fun ways to work up a sweat, including trail running, inline skating and stand-up paddleboarding.
