One of the most popular activities at the moment for those who love nothing more than getting out and about, and getting some exercise, has to be climbing. It’s an exercise for both the body and the mind, and you really do feel fantastic after a good old hearty clamber.

The even better news is that, for those really keen to go climbing in Staffordshire at the moment, there are lots of places to go to really put you through your paces.

In Leek, for example, you’ll find The Roaches, sat just above Tittesworth Reservoir in the very heart of the Peak District. This is a very popular place for both rock climbers and walkers, and you’ll likely find it quite busy at the weekends, so bear this in mind.

You could also check out Beeston Tor, which UK Climbing describes as a “real gem”, with highly pocketed limestone in a truly stunning location. The Tor can be enjoyed all year round thanks to its sheltered nature – but bear in mind that there are restrictions in place from Flying Doctor to Central Wall between April 16th and June 30th to protect nesting birds.

If you don’t feel confident in tackling outdoor rock climbing just yet, you can always make your way to the Audley Climbing Centre in Stoke-on-Trent instead, so you can hone your skills before putting them to the test in the real world. Sessions here can be tailored to your experience and skill level, but however long you’ve been climbing for you’ll find them fun and adventurous.

Sessions are also perfect for complete beginners because we can also teach you all the basic climbing skills and techniques, including how to belay. One day is all it takes to become absolutely hooked on this incredible sport and you’ll find that your confidence, determination and sense of achievement develops as you climb higher as well.

One of the main benefits of bouldering and rock climbing is that it strikes the perfect balance between an exhausting physical workout and rest periods and problem solving. Bouldering isn’t just about upper body strength and you’ll soon find that your leg muscles are vital in you getting up from a hold. Core strength is also essential if you’re to reach and twist to climb higher.

So if you’re looking for an all-over body workout that’s a huge amount of fun and that also makes you think, it sounds like bouldering might well be the activity you’ve been looking for all this time.
