Now that we’re emerging from the winter and the weather will hopefully begin to warm up, it’s the perfect time to look at what activities you can do to not only keep you in shape but also help you get outdoors a bit more.

BBC Sport recently suggested a few different ways to get moving now that spring is here. Among them is to take advantage of the lighter mornings and evenings by going for a jog before or after work.

Cycling, meanwhile, is an activity that your whole family may well enjoy getting involved in. If you’re looking for things to do in Derbyshire, you could head into the Peak District to try your hand (or wheels) at some of their off-road cycling routes.

Wanderlust magazine highlighted some of the many routes you can try. Among them is the circular trail around Carsington Water, a reservoir that lies between Ashbourne and Cromford. It’s an eight-mile route, with plenty of places where you can stop off on the way.

Another option is to head to the Sett Valley Trail, which at just five miles could be ideal for families. This follows a dismantled railway trail and ends in New Mills, where you can add a walk to the bottom of the Goyt Valley if you still have the energy.

The BBC article notes that cycling is a great low-impact exercise that gets your heart rate up and is good for a cardiovascular workout, as well as soaking up the best of the spring weather and some beautiful scenery.
